My career began in experimental flight test instrumentation, first in the Air
Force (including F-18 work), then in the helicopter industry, where
I was responsible for onboard instrumentation and a real-time
telemetry ground station used in experimental flight testing.
I went on to teach computer science and computer technology, helping
students build practical computing skills in problem-solving, design,
and the confident use of technology. As an Education Officer at the
Ontario Ministry of Education, I was responsible for the
Technological Education and Computer Studies curricula. That work
connected classroom realities with provincial direction and with tools
educators could use.
Throughout my teaching career, I was an early adopter of online tools.
I used them when they gave students a clear benefit, not simply because
they were new. My teaching was project-first: I designed activities and
projects to develop advanced computing skills, with technology serving
the work rather than becoming the work itself.
Through Beens Consulting, I create education resources, lead
workshops, and build practical AI tools, including custom GPTs and Gemini Gems
for curriculum planning, assessment, special education, computer
studies, and day-to-day classroom work. Education engagements are
often online and not limited to one region. I have been consulted to
write a chapter for a subject association on AI in the classroom,
and I take on project management for writing projects and webinars.
I have also started small business consulting, initially focused on
Niagara, with remote work available more broadly.
